A bit more about Chiloé...

The regional geography is the result of two large geological events: the collision of the Nazca oceanic plate with the South-American plate which thrust the mountain range upward and ruptured the earth’s crust, giving rise to a slew of volcanoes currently located along the Andes Mountain Range; and the impact of an intense, prolonged glacial era whose large masses of ice eroded the Central Valley below sea level, destroying along the way the continuity of the Coastal Mountain Range, giving rise to the Island of Chiloé when the ocean filled the Intermediate Depression.
